Goals for Kindergarten
Here is a list of the academic skills a child can be expected to learn by the end of their kindergarten year.
Math:
- Rote counting up to 100 (min.)
- Can count upward from a given number (i.e. if told "44", could then say "45, 46, 47..."
- Skip counting by tens to 100
- Skip counting by twos to 20
- Counting backwards from 10
- Understand the concept, name and symbol for zero.
- Can write the numbers 0-100
- Can recognize (although may not always spell correctly) the written names of numbers (i.e. "one, two, three...ten").
- Can tell time on an analog clock on the hour and half hour
- Can name the hands on an analog clock (hour, minute, second).
- Can identify coins (give the names and amounts in cents)
- Can name all major 2-D shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, oval, diamond, crescent, trapezoid, heart, star
- Recognize the symbols +, -, and = (can name these symbols and understand how to use them).
- Can add numbers to equal a total of 10 or less
- Can subtract single digit numbers
- Can solve simple word problems using single digit quantities.
- Can determine whether two numbers are greater than, less than, or equal to each other (for small quantities with large value gaps)
- Have beginning understanding of basic graphs.
- Can predict next item in an ABCABCABC pattern.
Science:
- Know months of the year
- Know days of the week
- Know the seasons and can describe general attributes of each
- Understands basic weather types.
- Knows the 5 senses and what organs they use
- Can identify several animal habitats (i.e. know some characteristics of a forest and name a few organisms that live there).
- Can name many body parts (including internal ones) and their function.
- Knows plant basics (i.e. what roots are and what they do, etc.)
- Knows basic astronomy facts (i.e. how the Earth moves around the sun, what stars are, etc.)
English (Reading/Writing/Spelling/Grammar):
- Proper grip on pen/pencil
- Knows the names and sounds of all letters (Upper and Lower case) along with some letter blends.
- Knows how to write all letters (Upper and Lower case).
- Knows to write/read from left to right, top to bottom of a page.
- Can write (mostly) on lines with proper form.
- Can spell and write out full name.
- Knows rules for Capitalization (Names, word "I", first letter of a sentence)
- Can read/write about 100 words.
- Can phonetically sound out most short vowel words.
- Can identify rhyming words
Misc.:
- Understand Fire safety (stop, drop, roll; don't play with matches)
- Know how to call emergency services
- Stranger Danger safety
- "Bad Touch" safety
- Knows address
- Knows at least one phone number for a parent
- Can identify many occupations and describe what they do (i.e. Mailman, Policeman, Cashier, etc.)
- Can wait in a line of people
- Can use a glue Stick properly
- Understand opposites
