Note that ‘can’ has been extended to include the definition of a container. I wouldn’t recommend starting a discussion on homonyms at this point unless the child initiates it by questioning the situation. There are other words like this in the following weeks.

Additional ideas for learning the vocabulary and phonetic concept:
- Print and cut out the words from one of the sentences above. Give the words to a child out of order. Read the sentence slowly and have the child select and line up the words into the correct order.
- Print out images for the words: Yak, Van, Bat, Ram, Ant. Print out the words and have the child match the word to the picture. (Or play a Memory game). You can include the words and pictures from the previous week for a larger variety and to remember previously learned words.
- Read any story that has a lot of words that fall into the short vowel 'A' category. Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Caps for Sale are all good choices. While reading the story, stop at a word the child would recognize, point at it, and let the child read that word.
